Freedom of speech is one of the rights that makes our country unique. It gives us the ability to speak our minds, share our opinions, question decisions, disagree with others, and stand up for what we believe is right.

But freedom of speech is more than simply having the right to talk.

It is having the freedom and the responsibility to use your voice.

At the Feeney Legacy Project, we believe that being a voice for change starts with refusing to be a bystander. Whether we are talking about saving a life, supporting our community, or participating in our democracy, our voices matter.

Speak Up. Speak Out. Stand Up.

Freedom of speech means we won’t always agree and that’s okay.

Healthy communities need people who are willing to ask questions, listen to different perspectives, share facts, and respectfully express their opinions. We don’t have to agree with everyone to respect their right to be heard.

Our voices can:

  • Raise awareness about issues that matter.
  • Challenge ideas and encourage meaningful conversations.
  • Support people who may not have a voice of their own.
  • Bring attention to problems that need solutions.
  • Inspire others to get involved.
  • Create change when words lead to action.

But using our voice also comes with responsibility. Before sharing information, check the facts. Before reacting, pause and listen. Before criticizing someone, remember there is a person behind the opinion.

Freedom of speech doesn’t require us to be loud. It asks us to be willing to speak when our voice can make a difference.

Don’t Be a Bystander

The Feeney Legacy Project teaches a simple lifesaving lesson: Don’t be a bystander. Be an upstander.

When someone is experiencing a medical emergency, don’t stand back and wait for someone else to act. Call 911. Take action. You could be someone’s second chance.

That same spirit applies to our communities.

When something matters to you, don’t assume someone else will speak up. Don’t assume someone else will vote. Don’t assume someone else will take action.

Use your voice.

Speak up for what you believe. Listen to others. Learn the facts. Get involved. Vote. And when the moment comes to take action, be an upstander.

Freedom gives us a voice.

What we do with that voice is up to us.

Your Voice. Your Freedom. Your Responsibility.

So this week, ask yourself:

What matters to me?
Where can I use my voice?
What action can I take?

You don’t have to change the world all at once.

Sometimes, change starts with one person speaking up.

Don’t be a BYSTANDER.
Be an UPSTANDER.

Take ACTION.
Make a DIFFERENCE.
