CAL_0216 The Author’s Table Dog, with Yishay Ishi Ron February 15

Dog is a short novel, about 180 pages, and a hard one. The man telling it goes by Geller. He was a decorated officer in an elite unit; he was wounded in Gaza, and now he lives in a Tel Aviv squat with two other addicts and feeds a heroin habit. Then a stray dog crosses his path, and he tries to look after it when he can barely look after himself. Some of the chapters are told by the dog.

Yishay wrote it out of his own war and his own PTSD, and he says so in the author’s note. It won the National Jewish Book Award for book clubs, and there’s a lot in it to talk about: what an army asks of the young people it sends, what comes home with them, and who looks after them when it does. Fair warning: the war scenes are graphic.

Yishay joins us from Tel Aviv to talk about the book and to take your questions. When he goes, Atlanta Israel Coalition will continue on talking about it. Stay on afterwards to schmooze. That part is never recorded.

Note the time: this event is at noon Eastern, 7 PM in Tel Aviv, not our usual eight in the evening.
