Bella Abzug was a Jewish American lawyer, activist, and politician known for her bold voice while wearing wide brimmed hats. She served in the U.S. Congress in the 1970s, where she fought for women’s rights, civil rights, and peace during the Vietnam War. Abzug helped co-found the National Women’s Political Caucus and pushed for greater representation of women in government. She was known for speaking out fearlessly and once said, “This woman’s place is in the House: the House of Representatives.”

The video below gives a short picture of Bella and her power and previews the PBS American Masters – Bella! This Woman’s Place is in the House–worth watching at pbs.org/americanmasters and the PBS App. The film was a joint winner of the 2022 Library of Congress Lavine/Ken Burns Prize for Film.

Bella gave women the power to stand up and know they matter.
