Seize the Awkward and help someone.

Are you worried about a friend or family member?

Here are a few signs to look for when someone is struggling…even a little bit:

  • Being impulsive–overshopping, eating, drinking, cleaning, running, escaping
  • A change in habits such as sleep, eating, appearance, energy, isolating, and not caring for oneself
  • Talking about feelings of loneliness or despair–sometimes in terms of someone else
  • Excessive worry
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Misuse of drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, vaping, and eating

Find a moment to talk:

Beginning the conversation doesn’t mean you have to dive straight into talking about mental health struggles or have a heart-to-heart. You can even talk about struggles you are going through to help the other person feel a connection and a safe place to open up. No need to overthink, just have a coffee, go on a walk, or share a pizza, and then go to a simple “what’s up.”

During the Conversation:

  • Be relaxed
  • Listen
  • Do not give advice or try to fix

After the Conversation

  • A one-time talk is not a cure
  • Continue checking in–showing you care
  • Talk, listen and be present

Opening the door to a conversation to someone who is struggling with any mental issues WILL make a difference. Remember the door is open so checking in will be easy.

Seize the Awkward has more resources and talking points. Helping each other through times of mental struggles is the right thing to do…we all have times of struggle. Mental Health issues should not be a silent issue.
