Amidst escalating extremism in post-war Palestine, a British officer and a Jewish activist become entangled in a doomed romance, in this propulsive thriller inspired by real events. As tensions rise in 1938 Tel Aviv, English policeman Thomas Wilkin falls for Shoshana, the daughter of a Zionist leader. Their love is marred by the violent campaign of a Jewish militant group against both Arabs and the occupying British. As death threats loom, Shoshana is torn between her emotions and the peaceful pursuit of Jewish statehood. With exceptional craftsmanship, director Michael Winterbottom’s 15-year passion project unravels the complex origins of the Arab-Israeli conflict and unexplored legacy of British colonialism, drawing disquieting parallels to contemporary political divisions.
