CAL_0213 0214 Irena's Vow JANUARY 31

In this gripping wartime drama, based on a true story, a strong-willed Catholic housemaid risks her life to save Polish Jews from the Nazi war machine, in an unforgettable tale of personal sacrifice, courage, and compassion.

At the tender age of 19, Irena, a former nurse, finds herself ensnared by the invading Nazis in 1939, then thrust into the role of housekeeper for a top German commandant. At first meek and compliant, her fiery resolve is ignited upon learning of the imminent liquidation of the Jewish ghetto, leading her to clandestinely shelter a dozen refugees in the safest place she can find—the concealed depths of the officer’s basement. Across an arduous span of two years, Irena, facing profound peril, must rely on her charm, wit, and guile to shield her friends from all but certain death, all while her Nazi employer’s suspicions grow.

Former child star of The Book Thief and Showtime’s Yellowjackets, Sophie Nélisse truly comes of age as the brave innocent defying fascism. Dougray Scott (Ever After; Mission: Impossible II) offers a complex performance as the Nazi commandant, with subtle hints of humanity under his odious veneer. Adapted from Dan Gordon’s Broadway play and filmed in Lublin, Poland, with authentic production design, this soul-stirring saga honors Irena Gut Opdyke’s heroism and mortal integrity, a Righteous Among the Nations medalist.
