This month we honor Emma Lazarus, the Jewish poet whose words helped define America’s identity as a place of refuge and hope.

In 1883, Lazarus wrote The New Colossus, the poem later placed on the Statue of Liberty. Her powerful lines welcoming immigrants became one of the most enduring messages of compassion in American history:

“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free…”

Through her poetry and advocacy, Emma Lazarus reminded the world that words can shape a nation and open its heart.
