Studio Earth: Mother Earth Figurines

Workshop supplies can be recycled materials and found objects, large fabric scraps, ribbon, string, and newspaper to create a Mother Earthfigurine. No sewing is required. Start with rolled up newspaper to be the support for the figure. Then add layers of materials, attaching them with string or yarn. Arms are made using more fabric and string. How Mother Earth’s clothing evolves depends on what fabrics and materials are selected. Add a scarf, a hat and a piece of found jewelry as a final embellishment. The completed Mother Earth can be a 3-D folk art work of art to enjoy at home, as a reminder to appreciate and care for our world.

Makes one figurine. Adult is encouraged to create the art with the child. If more than one child, cut more fabric and have more supplies as needed. Adult can help with tying knots. Fabric scissor and one other scissor (FISKER brand is good)

Supply List

• Paper -1 sheet 24” x18” (for newspaper) or 20”x20” for other paper.
• Newspaper (one large folded out page), gift wrap paper, shelf paper
• Ruler or tape measure
• Knitting yarn, string – 8 feet or more or skein of any color yarn, spool of string are good
• Assorted trims, ribbons, lace, tulle – any amount Fabric ––cotton or cotton blend fabric, T-shirt, pajamas, curtain, other recycled cotton material *If you have time, precut fabric to measurements below to make one Mother Earth. Multiply for more figurines.

Fabrics can be cut during the workshop but doing it before gives more time to create. Better to have more fabric so you have more fun deciding how to dress up your “Mother Earth”!

• 18”x18” One square fabric –solid color or with small pattern. (head & body)
• 16” x3” One rectangular long strip – Fabric/solid color or with patterns (arms)
• 12”x12” Five squares. Fabric/solid colors or with patterns (clothing)
• 15”x15” Two squares. Fabric/solid colors or with patterns (clothing) • 8”x 8” One square- Fabric/ solid color or with patterns (hat or kerchief)

Flora Rosefsky is known for her collage and mixed media work, Flora is a teaching artist who designs and coordinates community quilts for public institutions, and creates Jewish ritual works for synagogues. Flora leads workshops for cultural centers, museums, synagogues, schools and libraries.
