The Book – What’s Next? Southern Dreams, Jewish Deeds and the Challenge of Looking Back while Moving Forward

Janice Rothschild Blumberg continues to lead a storied life. The author has counted world leaders, scholars, artists and other prominent personalities as friends. Even in her late 90s, she continues to learn, staying open to what life brings her way, ready for what’s next.

As a child, she attended Sunday school at The Temple. After working in the Panama Canal Zone for the Army Corps of Engineers and elsewhere during World War II, she returned to Atlanta in 1946 and married the Temple’s new rabbi, Jacob Rothschild.

Over the next 27 years, Rabbi and Mrs. Rothschild made a formidable team, standing as leaders during numerous landmark cultural and societal developments, including the Temple bombing by antisemites in 1958, that resonate today. She also partnered with Rabbi Rothschild in orchestrating a 1965 dinner honoring Martin Luther King Jr. for his Nobel Peace Prize win, amid tensions in the still largely segregated community.

Her second husband was David Blumberg, president of B’nai B’rith.

Janice Rothschild Blumberg’s story is featured in The Breman’s 25th-anniversary exhibition History With Chutzpah: Remarkable Stories of the Southern Jewish Adventure, 1733-Present. She continues to make history.

Bill Rothschild, Rabbi Jacob and Janice Rothschild’s son was born in Atlanta. Bill is a lawyer and a rabbi who frequently speaks to church and synagogue groups on a variety of topics. Bill is married to Brenda Wise Rothschild. They share one son, two daughters, three sons-in-law, and four grandchildren.
