Atlanta Jewish Film Festival – A Letter to David

A filmmaker constructs a deeply personal cinematic letter to a friend kidnapped by Hamas during the October 7 attack, crosscutting between past and present to confront an unimaginable twist of fate. After actor David Cunio and twin brother Eitan were abducted, director Tom Shoval turned to the creative archive they built a decade earlier—audition tapes, behind-the-scenes footage, and home movies from a fictional kidnapping drama that now feels chillingly prophetic. Juxtaposing this material with images from the ruins of Kibbutz Nir Oz, he crafts an evocative meditation on brotherhood and the folding of fiction into real-world terror. Produced by Nancy Spielberg, this multilayered reflection gains intense resonance following David’s release in October 2025 after nearly two years in captivity.
