In this first Stories of Exile reading group discussion, we will explore the concepts of Home and Memory. We will discuss the short stories “The Bridegroom Tree,” and “By the Light of the Moon,” and “At the Western Wall” from Yenta Mash’s On the Landing and “Andrea” from Roberta Fernández’s Intaglio.
Yenta Mash and Roberta Fernández both write semi-autobiographical stories about their personal experiences living in their respective diasporas in the twentieth century. Mash was a Poland-born Jew who was sent into exile in Siberia during WWII and later immigrated to Israel. Fernández is a fifth-generation Tejana who grew up on the Texas-Mexican border deeply immersed in her family’s Mexican-American culture.
This program is for adults and high school-aged teens. Registration is required to receive the selected readings.
