Featuring world-renowned jazz vocalist Audrey Shakir, GSU Professor of Music and trumpeter Gordon Vernick, and pianist Louis Heriveaux. The program will include important compositions by some of the most well-renowned Jewish composers/lyricists of the first half of the 20th century including works by:

- Irving Berlin,

- Lorenz Hart,

- Oscar Hammerstein
Jazz developed in New Orleans within the African American community and spread up the Mississippi River to Chicago and Kansas City, then to New York. The Jewish immigrants coming from Eastern Europe in the early 20th century became exposed to this new music and many composers and performers caught the “bug.” These young Jewish artists lived very differently from their parents’ generation.
