Pre-conference day-trippers will be taken on an excursion to sites at the heart and soul of Atlanta’s Jewish history.
9 a.m:. Buses depart from the conference hotel (Marriott Courtyard Downtown Decatur/Emory)
The tour will include:
- Guided walking tour of the Jewish Sections of Historic Oakland Cemetery
- Visit to the Hebrew Benevolent Congregation (The Temple), Atlanta’s oldest Jewish congregation, founded in 1867
- Presentation at The Temple by William (Bill) Rothschild, Atlanta attorney and son of the late Rabbi Jacob M. Rothschild and Janice Rothschild Blumberg, about growing up in Atlanta, the Civil Rights Movement, and the 1958 Temple Bombing
- Lunch on your own at Ponce City Market
- Visit to Ahavath Achim Synagogue, Atlanta’s second-oldest Jewish congregation and the first founded by Eastern European Jews in 1886
- Presentation at Ahavath Achim by Prof. Mark K. Bauman of Atlanta Metropolitan State College (emeritus) and editor of Southern Jewish History on “Atlanta’s Historic Synagogues”
3:30 pm: Buses return to the conference hotel.
