Politics and History of Israel: Securing Next 25 Years

December 16, 2024 $180.00
Dec. Israel series (11)

Securing Israel’s Next Quarter-Century The majority of this session will be devoted to the Israel-Hamas (and Hezbollah and Iran) war and its aftermath. How did October 7 unfold? What drove the outlooks of Hamas and Israeli leaders? Like the 1948 and 1967 wars, the 2023-24 war seems to be reshaping multiple realities among Israelis, Palestinians, Diaspora Jews, Iran, and others. Why was the war reported with such vigorous bias against Israel? What myths, miscalculations, and prejudices brought into the war were reshaped or reinforced? How did the IDF fashion short-term tactics and longer-term strategies to degrade its enemies, often in close collaboration with the United States, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Western Europe? Looking back at Israel’s establishment, where has it succeeded or failed, and what remains unfinished as compared with 1948? What will Israel realistically look like in a quarter-century when it reaches 100?

This is Part 3 of CIE’s three-part series “Politics and History of Israel: From Jewish Peoplehood to Israel in 2048.” The Atlanta community is invited to register, enroll, and support this three-part series by Ken Stein, one of the world’s leading experts on the modern Middle East and Israel. Preregistration with a fee is required. Logistics and location will be provided days before the sessions.

Stein, an Emory University Emeritus Professor of Middle Eastern History, Political Science, and Israel Studies and the President of the Center for Israel Education, taught at Emory for 47 years and became one of the school’s best undergraduate teachers and mentors. In leading the Center for Israel Education, he is committed to teaching Israel’s story globally. The Center has reached some 7 million users since it began its work in 2008 of enriching knowledge of Israel across the world.

The $180 fee covers all three sessions, including materials, and a portion of the fee may be tax-deductible as a donation to CIE.
