Brad Mehldau, piano, and Ian Bostridge, tenor

October 18, 2019 Atlanta $55.00
Brad Mehldau-Michael Wilson_Ian Bostridge-Sim Canetty-Clarke

Spell-binding jazz pianist Brad Mehldau has always had a heart not only for jazz standards, but also for classical composers like Schumann and Brahms. Mehldau first met Ian Bostridge in 2015 when they discovered that even beyond their mutual admiration, they had numerous similar musical affinities. Since that time, Mehldau has written The Folly of Desire, an entire song cycle especially for the English tenor.

With lyrics from the poetry of Shakespeare, Yeats, and E.E. Cummings, this new song cycle runs from fantastically playful to extraordinarily intense. Schumann’s Dichterliebe (“The Poet’s Love”) fittingly completes the concert program as these iconic artists take the stage to traverse the borders separating musical genres.
