The 35th Edition of the Book Festival of the MJCCA Presents Billy Planer, Conversations That Matter: How Americans Can Talk About Tough Issues And Remain United

In conversation with Greg Bluestein, AJC Political Journalist

Author Talk, Q & A & Book Signing

We all have, or know someone who has, stopped talking with friends or family because of disagreements over politics, current events or the news. Many organizations, places of worship, and workplaces have had people who now can’t be in the same room with each other. Conversations That Matter is a guide that will help us bridge the divide that now exists for so many of us. Conversation can bring us together and help us find the humanity in each other.

In his thought-provoking, new book Conversations That Matter, Billy Planer, a highly regarded thought leader, teacher, and now author, shows us: how to push back without pushing away; how to stand up instead of walking away; how we can talk with people we disagree and remain united; how to be comfortable being in an uncomfortable conversation; and how to use conversation to take someone from the “other” to “another”.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Billy Planer is a distinguished thought leader, widely recognized for his innovative teaching about how and why we need to speak with people we disagree. With a career spanning over 35 years, he has become a trusted voice on having civil discourse about tough topics helping us close the widening divide we are feeling in America. By bridging the gap between theory and practical application, Planer’s teaching about talking to people who disagree, he guides us as we view people we may consider “the other” and start viewing them as “just another” by making human connections through these conversations. Planer has taken more than 35,000 people on journeys that focus on hearing people’s stories, thoughts, and opinions. A native Atlantan, Billy holds a bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University and earned a master’s in education and counseling from Georgia State University.
