The World of Jewish Ethics: Social, Business & Medical Ethics
In an age when society’s values are rapidly changing and are constantly called into question, many people are searching for a more fixed, permanent value system that can provide an anchor for identifying right from wrong. The goal of this course is to give the Jewish response to some of the moral and ethical issues of today and to demonstrate Judaism has a legitimate response and approach relating to every area of life.
Topics include privacy and truth-telling, living wages and CEO compensation, and genetic testing and experimental medicine.
Part 1 | Social Ethics
The great sage Hillel said “If I am not for myself, who is for me? And if I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?” Judaism places tremendous emphasis on the obligations and moral responsibilities we have to one another. Jewish ethical teachings and laws influence all of our interactions and relationships with friends as well as the total stranger.
Part 2 | Business Ethics
It is a fact that more than one fourth of the Code of Jewish Law focuses on proper Jewish behavior in the workplace and in the business world. We will select a handful of ethical dilemmas and examine through the prism of Judaic law and values.
Part 3 | Medical Ethics
Medical advances and changing attitudes have touched off a storm of ethical questions. How do Talmudic teachings of thousands of years ago help us navigate the many ethical dilemmas brought about by advanced medical discovery?
